Minecraft Zombie, Skeleton and Creeper-Style Skins: 10 Free Originals

Want a Minecraft zombie skin, a skeleton or something with creeper energy? Here are 10 free mob-inspired originals. There are three zombies, a sun-dried desert wanderer, a waterlogged diver, four skeletons and a green static hoodie. We drew each one as a person in decay or costume rather than copying the game's own mob textures. All are 64×64 PNGs you can download without an account, in time for Halloween.
They're made for Halloween servers, horror maps, hide-and-seek in dark caves and anyone who has always rooted for the mobs. If you want an exact copy of the game's zombie or creeper texture, look elsewhere. Those are Mojang's designs, and these skins are deliberately our own take.

The mob pack
Most mob skins online are single user uploads or edited copies of the default mob textures. This pack takes a different route. Each skin is a human character who has met a bad end, or is dressed for one, so you get the mood of the mob while keeping your own silhouette. Here are six from the front and the back. A good mob skin has to work from behind too, because a zombie is most unsettling when it's following you.
Zombies
Zombie Shambler is the classic. It has grey-green skin, dark sunken eyes, a slack mouth, and a red-and-black flannel shredded at the hem and sleeves so green skin shows through. One khaki knee is worn through. Zombie Camper has long tangled hair and a torn yellow raincoat, as if the camping trip went very badly. Zombie Prom wears a violet dress that has clearly been dancing for a few centuries, with a dark bun and a ragged hem.
All three use rips rather than random holes. A ragged edge cuts across the clothes, and the skin colour shows beneath it. That reads as torn fabric from a distance. Random single-pixel holes just look like noise.
Desert and drowned
Sand Wanderer takes its cue from the desert zombie, the husk. It has dry sandy skin, a hood and face wrap in fraying cloth, and diagonal bandage lines across the body and arms. Drowned Diver is inspired by the drowned. It has waterlogged teal skin, glowing cyan eyes, a soaked blue shirt torn at the hem and sleeves, and strands of seaweed hanging from the hair and over one shoulder.
Skeletons
Bare Bones is the tidy skeleton: bone-white limbs with darker edges, rib bars on the chest and back, a sternum down the middle, dark sockets and a toothy grin. Hooded Archer adds a brown hood, a quiver on the back and a strap across the ribs. Frost Stray takes after the icy stray, with pale blue bones under a ragged blue-grey hooded cloak and two pale cyan points of light in the sockets. Moss Bones is an old skeleton gone green, patched with moss in three shades and topped with one red toadstool.
Skeleton skins can't actually make your limbs thinner, because every player model has the same block arms and legs. The trick is paint. A darker column down each side of the arms and legs makes the bone in the middle look narrower than the limb it's painted on.
Creepers: the static hoodie
Static Hoodie is our answer to creeper skins: a hoodie in green pixel static, hood up, with your own face looking out and black joggers below. It borrows the colour and the crackly texture that make people think "creeper" but leaves out the mob's face. That face is Mojang's design and the most recognisable part of the mob. Leaving it off keeps the skin original, and it also makes it wearable outside Halloween. It just looks like a loud green hoodie.
Minecraft's usage guidelines ask fan creations not to look official, and they don't set specific rules for mob-themed skins. So we stay on the cautious side throughout this pack. We drew original people in costume or decay and copied no mob textures.
Painting decay and bone
Every material in this pack uses a short ramp of three or four tones from light to dark, plus one accent. The zombie ramp runs from a grey-green base through a darker blotch tone to a deep green for the eye sockets and mouth. The bone ramp runs from off-white through two greys for the sternum and joints to a dark grey for the gaps between bones. The waterlogged ramp pairs teal with a deep teal for the sockets, then adds cyan for the eye glow and bright green for the seaweed.
Use the darkest tone sparingly: in the eye sockets, the mouth and the gaps between bones. Let the base colour cover most of the skin. If everything is dark, the face disappears at play distance. Our guide to designing your own Minecraft skin explains the template and the two layers if you want to paint your own monster.
Zombify your own skin
The most personal mob skin is a zombie version of the skin you already wear, and you can make one in about twenty minutes. Open your current PNG in any pixel editor. Then repaint every skin-coloured pixel on the face, hands and any bare arms with a grey-green from the zombie ramp above. Keep your hair, clothes and accessories exactly as they are, because that's what tells friends it's still you.
Next, sink the eyes. Replace each eye with a 2×2 block of the darkest green, and drop the mouth to a single dark line. Then rip the clothes. Pick a row near the bottom of the shirt and each sleeve and give it a jagged edge, with the green skin showing below. Finally, add one or two blotches in the middle tone on the face or arms. That's the whole recipe. Save it as a new file so your original stays safe for November.
Best moments to wear one
Halloween is the obvious one, but mob skins work all year. They suit hide-and-seek in a dark cave, horror adventure maps, and a nether or deep-dark build where a cheerful skin looks out of place. They also suit video intros where you play the villain. A whole group in zombie skins chasing one player in a normal skin is a ready-made minigame. Once October is over, the Christmas skins take the next seasonal turn.
Server rules come first. Some servers replace custom skins altogether, so check before you plan a group bit around them. For something cuter on the same theme, the cat Minecraft skins post has animal originals in the same style.
Free originals or a Marketplace pack?
These are flat 64×64 skins, so the costume is paint on the standard player model. Bedrock's Marketplace sells Halloween and monster packs from creator studios, and some add 3D horns, hoods or claws a flat skin can't. They're priced in Minecoins and the prices change, so we don't quote them. On a console, where you can't import a PNG, a paid pack is usually the only way to wear a ready-made monster, and the official Minecraft Marketplace is where to look. That one's an affiliate link. Buying through it can earn SkinStash a commission at the usual price.
For the free skins on Java, upload the PNG in the Minecraft Launcher's Skins tab or on your minecraft.net profile. On Bedrock for Windows or mobile, import it from the Dressing Room's Classic Skins tab. The install guide covers both.
Mob-inspired Minecraft skins: FAQ
How do I get a zombie skin in Minecraft?
Download one of the three zombie PNGs above (Zombie Shambler, Zombie Camper or Zombie Prom). Then upload it through the Java launcher or minecraft.net profile, or import it from the Dressing Room on Bedrock for Windows or mobile.
Is there a creeper skin for free?
Static Hoodie is our free creeper-inspired skin: a green pixel-static hoodie with your own face showing. We left out the creeper's face because that design belongs to Mojang.
Can you be a mob in Minecraft?
Not in vanilla survival. A skin only changes the paint on the player model, so you keep the player's shape, hitbox and abilities. A mob skin makes you look like a monster, not play as one.
What is the scariest Minecraft skin?
Scary skins rely on dark sunken eyes and a face that's hard to read. In this pack, Drowned Diver's glowing eyes and Frost Stray's hooded skull are the creepiest at night.
Are these copies of the game's mob textures?
No. Every skin is an original drawing of a person in costume or decay. They're inspired by the mobs' colours and moods, not traced from Mojang's textures.
